The wheels have been set in motion this week to begin the process to re-establish an adult county Ladies Gaelic Football team for Kilkenny. At a recent county board meeting it was decided that 2021 was the year to build up an adult panel and invest time and personnel into developing this squad with a view to competing nationally again in the near future. With growing numbers participating in Ladies Football in Kilkenny and strong groundwork done, in recent years, with keeping teenage girls playing the sport it is now a favourable time to harness an adult panel. There is a strong interest already from mentors looking to be part of the management panel who will commit to developing and strengthening an adult team for Kilkenny Ladies Gaelic. The Kilkenny *LGFA Development Committee are preparing a roadmap to outline the manner in which the adult squad will be reformed. This will ensure the proper support and resources are in place to enable the adult squad and management to progress and succeed to their maximum potential. This is an exciting time for Kilkenny Ladies Gaelic with the launch of their much anticipated 3 Year Plan on the horizon. One can’t help but have the aspiration that these coming years could be the building blocks to a Kilkenny Ladies Gaelic Football team once again winning an All-Ireland Title. The Kilkenny Junior team of 2007 beat London in a thrilling final and were crowned Junior All-Ireland champions. Caitríona Corr, who made up part of that winning panel, commented, ‘That year was just incredible and I was so lucky to play with such a talented squad. That talent is still here in Kilkenny in abundance and there’s no reason a Kilkenny Ladies Gaelic Football team can’t rise to the top once more.’ It sounds like the future is bright..and it’s also black and amber!
